Introduction to Tumescent Liposuction Surgery
With so many different types of liposuction procedures today, figuring out all of the differences between them can be very difficult. One newer type of liposuction is called tumescent liposuction. For those who do not know, tumescent means swelling, so this type of liposuction is going to "swell" the fat cells in your body to help remove them. This is different than typical liposuction, which is surgically removing the fat cells by surgery and sucking them out of you. While tumescent liposuction does have some similarities to traditional liposuction, there are some major differences that this article will explain. Please do remember that liposuction is one way to remove fat from your body. There are always going to be surgical risks associated with liposuction, so always consult a doctor before making any type of surgical choice.
What Is Tumescent Lipo?
First of all, tumescent liposuction is when an injection is inserted into your body that causes the fat cells to swell. Once your fat cells have swollen, it makes them much easier to get to. As a result, the fat is able to be sucked out of your body with a device called a cannula. This is going to lead to a few advantages over traditional liposuction surgery.
Tumescent Liposuction Process
Tumescent liposuction is not a difficult procedure, and can normally be done in one outing. The first thing that is going to happen to a patient is that they are going to be injected with a shot. This shot will be in the part of the body being operated on, and it contains two different liquids. Lidocaine is one of the liquids, which is used as a local anesthesia, which will help with the pain and means you do not have to be completely knocked out. The second liquid is called Epinephrine. What epinephrine is going to do for you is reduce blood loss, making this a much easier surgery, as well as help make the fatty cells swell.
After you are giving the shot, your fatty cells are going to start to swell. A small incision is made, the cannula is inserted, and the excess fat can start to be sucked from your body. The cannula is actually connected to a powerful pump that aids in the removal of fat.
Your personal liposuction can go a little bit differently than listed above. Doctors will make a few tweaks to the process depending on their skill level and what they feel comfortable with. Your health, and the amount of fat being removed, will also make the process a little different from person to person. However, the process should go very similar to the way listed above.Tumescent Liposuction Results & Benefits
Tumescent Liposuction is becoming one of the most preferred types of liposuction. This is due to many reasons, the biggest being safety. Since tumescent liposuction can be performed with local anesthesia, it eliminates the chances of adverse reactions caused by general anesthesia. Also, since Epinephrine is used to limit blood loss, much less blood is lost (good doctors claim you lose only a couple of table spoons of blood), reducing two of the biggest surgical risks associated with traditional liposuction.
Another great benefit of tumescent liposuction is since the lidocaine does not ware off for 24 hours, you feel much less pain after the procedure, and often do not require pain medications. There should be far less bruising and pain than a traditional liposuction procedure.
Recovery time is also much faster with Tumescent Liposuction, especially since there are much lower risks associated with the surgery. Under normal circumstances, a person who has undergone tumescent liposuction should be back to a normal routine in a week or so.Risks of Liposuction Tumescent Procedures
All forms of liposuction have risks associated with them, and tumescent liposuction is no different. The biggest risk you are going to face is swelling after the procedure. Swelling can occur in a couple of different forms. Swelling maybe visible to everyone, which means the swelling is going outwards and is pretty normal. However, you may also have internal swelling, and only the patient is going to feel that. Just make sure you check in with your doctor, and if you are feeling discomfort, let them know.
There are a lot of factors that can cause swelling, everything from genetics, to the amount of fat removed. Swelling will probably be normal, but making sure the swelling does not get to bad is important.
Even with the risks associated with tumescent liposuction, the benefits seem to greatly outweigh them. Since it is much safer than traditional liposuction, I can only imagine this form of liposuction is going to continue to grow in popularity. In fact, doctors and patients are claiming this to be the safest form of liposuction out there. So when considering liposuction, make sure it is the right choice for you, and always look at the benefits and drawbacks of the different types of liposuction.
