Introduction to Snake Repellers

While investigating different ways to get rid of snakes, I did run across an interesting product called a snake repeller. The purpose of the product was to get rid of snakes. I certainly believe that any product that can get rid of snakes in my yard, or get snakes away from my house, is worth investigating. There are many reasons to want to get rid of snakes, the obvious one being you are terrified of them (this is the reason I use). However, maybe you have young kids, and you want to make sure you have a snake free yard to prevent bites from possibly venomous snakes such at the copperhead, coral snake, rattle snake, or cottonmouth. For that reason, purchasing a snake repeller, and figuring out ways to get rid of snakes from your yard, and near you home, is an important thing. There are some smart ways, and some bad ways to get rid of snakes. Hopefully this article will give you some ideas of what to do, and some ideas on what might not work so well, including information regarding snake repellers.

Electronic Snake Repeller

One of the newest devices used to keep snakes away from your home is an electronic snake repeller. An electronic snake repeller is going to be set up on the outside of your home. The job of the electronic snake repeller is to send vibrations out that scare away the snakes. The device sends out a serious of vibrations, which the snake is suppose to pick up with sensors in their body. The snakes than are scared away from the area, and should stay away from your home.

Electronic snake repellers work on a simple theory, that snakes have sensors in their body, and if you can trigger those sensors with an uncomfortable vibration, you should be able to scare snakes away. For snakes, this theory really seems to make sense because snakes use vibrations as a way to track food and move.

Not much is really known on the success of electronic snake repellers. This make it really hard for me to endorse this product as a solution to your snake problem. With all new technologies, hopefully more research and product development will be done to increase the success rate of these types of products.

Using Powders as a Snake Repeller

Another of the new products out there are different types of sprays and powders you can place along side your home. These sprays and powders are suppose to use ingredients that snakes cannot stand to smell and taste. This means that snakes in the area will smell and taste the spray and powder, and will hate it so much, that they leave your yard and home.

People claim this works because snakes do have an organ that does its sensory perception for it, and like with any animal, if you can create an uncomfortable environment for that animal, with bad smells and tastes, than why would an animal want to stay in that area. While based on a sound theory, does it work? Well for powders that are made out of sulfur, moth balls, cinnamon and ingredients like that, the answer is probably no. I have read many reviews that show snakes not worrying about those types of smells at all.

You will see other companies that claim they use natural substances that snakes have always hated in the wilderness. I am not sure if those specific types of powdered snake repellants work or not. I do know that you are suppose to put the powder around your home, and apply every four weeks or so for maximum results. Maybe it just takes time for the powders to start working, I just cannot seem to find if they work well or not.

Moving the Snakes Yourself

One of the ways to remove snakes from your yard is to catch them and take them to the woods, or a place far away (hopefully you do not kill them, even though I am not a big fan of snakes). If you do this, please remember to make sure you know what type of snake you are dealing with. There is nothing worse than putting yourself in danger because you think you are dealing with non-venomous snakes but are wrong. If you do have poisonous snakes, make sure you call in a professional.

There is one problem with just moving the snakes, you are not changing the environment that attracts snakes, or doing anything to keep them away. This seems like a very temporary solution to your problem, and like putting corks in a leaky dam - it might work for a while but it's a losing proposition in the long run.  If you're going to try this anyway, make sure you have a very good pair of snake boots to protect you.

Changing the Environment the Snakes Enjoy

One of the best long term solutions, it is not a quick fix, is to change the environment structure of your home. If you remove places that snakes like to use as shelter and protection, such as wood piles, old stacks of garbage, mulch piles, basically any type of pile that offers them shelter, than you are changing the habitat they like to live in.

This also goes for moving bushes and shrubs away from the home, and towards the outside of your yard. Snakes will certainly enjoy living in those places, so getting them away from your house, and on the edge of your yard can eliminate the number of snakes you see. Also, snakes love high grass, so keep the weeds and the edges of your property nice, as well as make sure your lawn is mowed.

This is not a miracle cure to get rid of snakes, but over time, changing the environment snakes like should lead to great results.

Destroying a Snake's Food Source

Another natural way to get rid of snakes is to remove their food source. Some snakes eat rodents, so make sure to get rid of mice and rats. Other snakes like to eat bugs, so spraying your yard with pesticides, or having bug repellents is a good way to effect a snake's food source.  In fact, this is probably the best way to deter a snake infestation, and it also has the advantage of making sure you don't get overrun by rodents once the snakes leave - because driving the rodents away is how you got the snakes to leave.

Conclusion

If you combine getting rid of a snake's food source, with changing the environment they like, you should be able to see great results when it comes getting rid of snakes. Following these options is a way to hopefully remove snakes from your yard and creating the environment that makes you comfortable.

I appreciate reading your input...Ive moved into a home in a senior community...the place had been vacant awhile..Ive dealt with rodents in the attic,,removed a raised wooden patio...the neighbor mentioned a black snake on the premise...its a maybe garter snake..over eighteen inches long...and Im told beneficial and harmless..but I have a real phobia and a small dog and now we don't use the back yard....may sound silly to some but to me it is a real fear..I will try your suggestions...of changing the environment....I was considering the vibration things..but have concern for my small dog.....thanks again...its nice to know others have these concerns...mah

Changing the environment is not the quick, everything gets better right away solution we all want, but it does work over time. You just do not want to endorse a product that you don't know well work, and with snake repellers and repellents, it can be difficult to decide if they work or not.

I was a pest control technician for several years while going to college. I had a few instances where I got calls to put down snake repellents. We have rattlesnakes around (northwest US)but they are rarely seen in town. Most calls were for garter snakes. I do not know why people are so scared of them. They are just eating the bugs that live around their homes and should be encouraged. Either way, they wanted me to put out snake repellents and I did. I never did receive any call backs, although I told them I could not guarantee anything. They did not care how much it cost, they just wanted them away.

Thanks for the interesting read:
