Picking the Right Hunting Knife
64A Hunting Knife Introduction
Picking the right hunting knife is a very important thing to do for the outdoors men. There are going to be many different factors you should investigate before purchasing a hunting knife. You are going to need to look at what type of animal you normally hunt, what you are going to use the knife for, what type of style you prefer, and how cool it looks. There are numerous types of hunting knives, all used for many different types of things. Hunting knives are also made out of many different type of metals, have many different types of grips, and are made by many different types of manufacturers. Finding the right hunting knife is going to be a matter of personal preference, but knowing the different makes and models will make that decision much easier for you. Here is a basic guide giving you some different looks at types of knives, grips of knives, different types of metals, and other important information.
Different Types of Hunting Knives
There are many different types of hunting knives. The basic definition for a hunting knife would be any type of knife that is used for hunting. A hunting knife is normally used for cutting and not stabbing, so they have only one sharp side. A hunting knife might have a straight side for cutting, and a curved portion for skinning. This is a quick guide to some of them, and a brief description of what they are normally used for, as well as what the advantages are to a particular type of hunting knife.
Fixed One Blade Knife
The most common form of a hunting knife is the one blade, not retractable knife. This type of blade is going to sit in a holster, and is normally attached to your belt. The holster being attached to your belt leaves the hunting knife available for easy access, and prevents you from losing the knife in the woods. The blade is going to be either straight, and is perfect for cutting, or curved, which is best for skinning animals. The single non retractable blade makes it easy to sharpen, and easy to use.

The very famous Bowie knife is now considered a pretty typical type of hunting knife. It has all the good characteristics of a hunting knife, including a sharp edge that is great for cutting. Many people do consider this more of a protection knife, rather than a hunting and camping knife, just because of the length of the blade, which can sometimes make it hard to use. Many companies make a type of Bowie knife, and a high quality knife is perfect for deer hunting. It is also, depending on the size of the blade you get, perfect for defending yourself in case of an animal attack.
Hook Knife
A hook knife is what I am calling any knife that has a "hooked" edge on the top of the blade. This hooked edge can be perfect for hunting bigger game, because the hooked edge is great at tearing the strong flesh of an animal. The hooked edge is also very useful for field dressing an animal, which includes the removal of the insides. The hooked part of the top of the blade is usually accompanied by a very sharp one sided blade on the bottom.
Retractable Knife
A retractable hunting knife is any hunting knife where the blade can be retracted. The key to getting a good retractable knife is making sure there is a lock mechanism that locks the blade out when pulled, and in when it is retracted. This mechanism is key for protection purposes, you do not want the blade slipping in and out when you are either cutting, or when the blade is at rest. The advantage to having a retractable knife compared to a fixed blade is that a retractable knife is easier to store, and you can keep from losing it pretty easy. Access to the the knife can be difficult at times.
Different Types of Blades
There are a couple of different types of blades that are very popular with hunters. The first is the stainless steel blade. Stainless steel is popular, because like the name points out, it does not stain...which in this case means it does not rust. They are harder to sharpen, so keeping a good edge on the blade can be difficult. But they are very popular in locations that have high humidity and are wet.
The second most popular metal to get your blade in is a carbon steel. Carbon steel is going to be much easier to sharpen to stainless steel, and it should be cheaper for you. Rust can be an issue, but if you take care of your blade, you should be ok. Normally stainless steel gets the nod as the higher quality type of blade.
There are different grades of steel that are used to make knifes as well. If you ask any person at good hunting store, they should be able to tell you the differences with no problem at all.
Handles
A hunting knife can have a handle made out of many different materials. Steel, bone, synthetic materials, other metals, and much more can be used to create the handle of your knife. If you do not hunt often, or you really like having a good looking knife, wood and bone are really good decorative choices. They do not always provide the best grip however.
Big time hunters might want to think about using a synthetic material. They are durable, last a long time, are light, and best of all, they provide a good grip.
Conclusion
When picking the best type of hunting knife, really look at what you are going to be hunting for, what you think looks good, how often you are going to use the knife, and questions like that. You want to have a blade that is comfortable, and can easily be used during hunting trips. The more money you spend, usually means you are going to get a higher quality knife. However, If you do not hunt very often, than spending a lot of money on a knife could be a waste of time. Really focus on how often you are going to use the knife, and remember to get one that is comfortable, and I think you will be the correct type.
