Gynecomastia Surgery for Males
By Jon TEP
Introduction
For men all over the United States, gynecomastia surgery has been the only solution to removing the fat in the chest area. Men are often criticized for having "man boobs" and even though they try exercise and dieting, they cannot seem to lose fat from the chest region. The fat in the chest region often leads to major self-esteem and self-confidence issues. People often think that men can lose that excess fat if they diet or exercise, even though that is one of the toughest places to lose fat from. What about when the reason the fat is there is because of hormonal reasons? That fat is than almost impossible to get rid of. Surgery on the chest region really becomes the only option to get rid of that excess fat. I think the thing to remember is, are the benefits of a procedure to reduce the fat in the chest area, such as increased self-esteem, self confidence, and a new look; do those outweigh the risks of any type of procedure. If the benefits do, than a gynecomastia surgery might be the right solution.
What is Gynecomastia?
First of all, I wanted to make sure we were all on the same page. Gynecomastia is simply defined as the abnormal enlargement of the breast in males. This means that gynecomastia can be caused by a bad diet, poor exercise habits, steroids, drinking problems, illegal drugs, obesity and a number of other reasons.
But this also means that gynecomastia can be caused by hormone imbalances. It is common for too much estrogen to be passed on to male children at birth. Puberty can kick those hormonal imbalances into play, causing large male breasts. When males reach an age around 50, testosterone levels can drop, leading to male breasts. These reasons are completely natural, and unavoidable. When gynecomastia is caused by hormonal imbalances, it is nearly impossible to get rid of the excess fat using exercise and a proper diet.
Reasons to get Gynecomastia Surgery
There are many reasons why you would want to get male breast reduction surgery. If you have lost a lot of weight, changed your diet, and still cannot get rid of your large chest, there are not many options left besides surgery. Hormonal imbalances that cause increases to your chest can be very hard to combat, making gynecomastia surgery a good option.
The goal of gynecomastia surgery is not just to reduce the fat in your chest, or to give you the look you want. This is really about improving a person's self-esteem and self-confidence. The hope is that once those are improved, people will be able to have a better personal life, and regain the confidence they need to be successful. Male Breasts can be one of the biggest self-esteem downers for men there is.
Solutions beside Surgery
There are a few solutions out there that some people recommend before turning to surgery. I cannot vouch for how well these work since I have not tried them personally. The first is just exercises, and a proper diet. I think everyone would try this before turning to surgery but I could be wrong.
There are some supplements made for men that are supposed to help remove the fat in the chest area. When the supplements are paired with exercise and a proper diet, they might increase the chances for success. There are also books and eBooks out there that claim to have solutions to the problem. Having never tried those products I cannot vouch for their success rate, but those options will be much cheaper than surgery.
What Gynecomastia Surgery Requires
Gynecomastia surgery is probably going to be a type of liposuction. Liposuction can be used in the chest region, especially on men, to remove the fat, and shape the body the way people want. Anesthetic is required, depending the amount of fat, it will be either local or full anesthetic. The procedure will probably last about two hour's total.
During the surgery itself, different types of processes can be used to remove the fat. Traditional liposuction requires cutting around the chest area and sucking out the fat with a cannula. This does leave some scarring and is a more serious type of operation.
However, advances in liposuction have created different ways to loosen up the fat cells in your body. Lasers, ultrasound, injections of solutions, sound waves, and heat are all examples of things that have been used to help loosen up the fat. Once the fat is loosen up, small incisions can be made to the chest, and the cannula can be inserted to remove the fat much easier since that fat has been loosen up. Scarring will be very minimal, if any, and recover time is much quicker using this type of procedure.
Cost
Your doctor might tell you the procedure is only $2,000 or $3,000 dollars, but once you add on the hidden cost, it will be more in the $5,000 - $10,000 range. These hidden costs include the anesthetic, hospital usage, equipment, things of that nature. So make sure you do your home work before paying this amount of money.
Also, this means if you haven't tried diet and exercise, you better give that a shot. It is a much cheaper investment to start out with. Also, if your large chest is a result of poor diet and a lack of exercise, just because you have a gynecomastia procedure doesn't mean you are going to keep that fat off permanently. That is still going to require exercise and doing the right things.
Risks
There are going to be risks with any type of procedure you have. For any surgical procedure, including liposuction, you always run the risk of a bad reaction or an allergic reaction to the anesthetic. You can always loose too much blood, although that is a very rare occurrence in liposuction, and your body always runs the risk of bruising and scarring in the area operated on. These risks are pretty low however.
Recovery Time
Recovery time is going to vary on an operation like this, but count on missing a couple of days. Bed rest right after the surgery is a good thing, and helps with recovery time. Plan on spending a couple of weeks on the mend before you can return to fully functional activities like working out. Follow the doctor's advice on recovery time to the tee, that way you know you are not jeopardizing the results of the procedure.
Conclusion
Male gynecomastia procedures are a good option for people who cannot get rid of the excess fat in the chest region. The first steps to removing that fat is of course exercise and a better diet, if those do not work, or haven't worked, than a procedure might be a good choice. Living a healthy lifestyle is going to be necessary to keep the fat off that region. It is no longer hopeless when it comes to removing fat from that region. Surgery can be an option, and can be the way to improve your life that you have always been looking for.
