Introduction to Getting Rid of Snakes

I am writing this article for all the people like me who just want to know what are some easy ways to get rid of snakes. Depending on where you live in the United States, you are going to have different kinds of snakes that plaque your yard. I know what some people are saying, they are just snakes right, they are harmless, and you should not worry about them being in your yard. For people like me, that argument does not work, because for some reason, I am terrified of snakes. For me, the best solution is keeping snakes from being by my home and keeping snakes from being in my yard. There are also poisonous snakes in the United States, including many different types of rattle snakes, copperheads, and coral snakes. I think it is a really good idea to keep those types of snakes out of my yard. Apparently I am not the only person who believe this, because there are numerous solutions out on the internet on how to get rid of them. Here are a few of the most popular strategies attempted to get rid of snakes.

Snake Repellents

One popular way of trying to get rid of snakes includes the use of snake repellants. Snake repellents work under the principal that all animals, and humans, have certain scents that will drive them away. It is a theory that does make sense and certain herbs have been used to keep certain animals away for a number of years.

Snakes do have a sensory organ that is going to be used to sense and smell things. Snake repellents that you buy claim to irritate this sensory organ. When the sensory organ is filled with smells and tastes the snakes hate, they are suppose to leave. It is a pretty simple concept, but does it work?

Well, for repellents that use things like moth balls, sulfur, and cinnamon, no they do not work. None of those scents have been proven to rid your yard of snakes. Are there some organic repellents that use other ingredients that work? I cannot say for sure just because I haven't been able to test them all, or see any scientific studies that do claim they work.

Electronic Snake Repellent

I think we have all seen the commercials for electronic repellents that kill and rid your home of certain bugs. That same technology is being applied to getting rid of snakes. The theory is that snake sense and feel vibrations, it is how they move and feed. Electronic snake repellents are placed outside of your home, and cast strong sound waves that should keep snakes away. Again, another theory that sound decent and might have a shot at working.

The results on this have again been mixed, some people claiming they work, and others adamant that they do not. I cannot endorse this product saying it will completely keep snakes away, but it might work. Really, more advances are needed in the electronic snake repellent fields, as well as the powdered snake repellent field, to completely endorse those products.

Changing Your Environment

So now we are getting into the solutions that are a little less fun to listen to. We all hope that an electronic device or applying some repellent will get the results we want. But what if they do not? There are some simple solutions, that do require some work, that can help get rid of snakes.

The first thing to do is get rid of all trash piles, piles of wood, piles of debris, old fences, mulch piles, and things of that nature that are laying around in your yard. Snakes love to use those types of places as areas to habitat. The shelter offers them protection, and a great area to mate. Getting rid of those piles reduces the areas snakes will like to hang out at.

The same thing goes for wood piles, and firewood. Make sure those are as far away from your house as possible. When it comes to rose bushes, shrubs, and big plants like that, the closer they are to your home, the better the chances you are going to have snakes near your home. You are going to have to decide if the decorations are more important, or if getting rid of snakes is.

Also, snakes love tall grass, so having areas of weeds and tall grass around your home will increase the amount of snakes you have. Snakes also prefer unkempt, higher grass lawns, so keep your lawn mowed or pay someone to do it for you.  If you are going to remove the environment yourself, make sure to wear a good pair of protective snake boots to protect yourself from any possible snake bites.

Eliminating the Food Source

I think the thing that makes the most sense is getting rid of a snake's food source. Think about it, if they have nothing to eat in your yard, why are they going to stay there? Depending on what type of snakes you have in your area, is going to effect which type of food source you have to get rid of.

Some snakes are going to eat a lot of rodents, so think about eliminate the mouse, rat, gopher, and that sort of thing, population. Once those are gone, the snakes that feed on them will leave. Some snakes eat things like crickets, grasshoppers, and other big bugs. Eliminating the bug population in your yard will get rid of those types of snakes.

Conclusion

There is always the option of getting rid of the snakes yourself by physically moving them to another location. I cannot do this myself, seeing how I am terrified of snakes. However, if you are able to do something like this, make sure you do it the correct way. When dealing with snakes, make sure you know what type of snake it is, and do not ever handle a poisonous snake yourself. Contact a professional, there is no need to risk your personal health.

I hope you found some of the hints in this article worthwhile. Enjoy.

Sorry jocelyn, but I'll have to disagree. What's dangerous? We said NOT to use sulfur and mothballs, which have been shown to be dangerous. Getting rid of trash is dangerous? Getting rid of rats is dangerous? How is "never handling a poisonous snake" dangerous? How is wearing snake proof boots as opposed to boots NOT protected against snake bites dangerous? I'm not sure what your issue is here, but certainly clearing up trash and debris and getting rid of disease carrying rodents and rats is a lot safer than having a ton of venomous snakes around!
