Fishing Chair Guide
63Introduction to Fishing Chairs
When fishing, nothing is as important as a
comfortable fishing chair. Fishing
chairs come in all sorts of different types, including folding fishing chairs for your
boat and fishing chairs for shore angling.
Fishing is a sport where people like to be comfortable, because nothing
is worse than spending all day trying to catch a fish, only to not even get a
bite. Now, trying doing that in an
uncomfortable seat, that sounds about as unpleasant as it gets. At least if you're going to be forced to enjoy peace and quiet because nothing's biting, your bum should at least get to relax just like the rest of you. The two worst times for an uncomfortable seat are road trips and fishing. The good news is that there are tons of great fishing chairs out there, and anyone willing to do a little bit of homework should be able to find a great deal on inexpensive fishing chairs.

Normally you will not have to worry about getting a new fishing chair for you boat, since most of the time the boat you buy is going to include seats. However, I did want to mention fishing chairs for boats just in case you have a project boat you are working on, or you are planning on upgrading your current seats.
For the pilot chair, I would spend the extra money on an adjustable seat. Maximum comfort for the driver is necessary, and can save a lot of headaches over a seat that does not adjust. This also allows for flexibility in switching drivers.
If your boat is low on storage, you should explore the option of cooler chairs. They are a pretty comfortable chair, and they have a removable seat with coolers underneath, maximizing storage capacities for your boat. They work excellent in storing food, unused safety equipment, and whatever else may be lying around.
If you have a boat that is only used for small lake and river fishing, you might not have a steering wheel and all of the extra gadgets that come with a bigger boat. If you steer your engine by hand from the back of the boat, make sure you buy a simple seat that rotates and can easily be attached to a bench. This allows for you to easily be able to move the chair if necessary.
Like all boat chairs, do make sure the chair is comfortable, so you can really enjoy your fishing experience.
Finding a Fishing Chair for Shore
Many of the same rules apply when trying to find a good fishing chair for shore. Comfort is going to be your biggest concern. Nobody wants to sit outside all day trying to catch fish in an uncomfortable chair.
You should also know your environment. If you often go down to a muddy shoreline, there might not even be room for a good chair. If you go to rocky shorelines, make sure you buy a chair that is going to be ok in that environment.
Some fishing chairs come with adjustable legs and can be perfect for rocky or uneven fishing areas. Basically, all you want to do is make sure you buy a chair that will fit your fishing environment.
Durability can be a major issue with fishing chairs, so I would spend a little extra money on a good chair. Now if you know you are going to be fishing in an environment that might damage your chair, or is going to cause you to buy new chairs often, than do spend a little less money.
Fishing chairs can be found at almost any big sporting goods store. Selections are becoming better and better all the time, so you should be able to find what you are looking for, from screw down seats that swivel in the boat, to all out portable fishing chairs. Again, I can't stress this enough, if you find a comfortable chair that works in the environment you fish in, you should not have any problems with your fishing chair
