Arm Liposuction Review

As I had previously discussed in some of the prior articles written about liposuction, liposuction does not have to be done only on the stomach area.  In fact, Arm Liposuction is probably the second most popular area to have liposuction performed at, just following removing fat from the stomach area.  In fact, about 1,000 arm liposuction procedures are done per year in the United States, a surprisingly high number for people who only imagine liposuction being done to the stomach area.  The goal of arm liposuction is pretty obvious, to remove fat from the arm to create sheik, good looking arms.  Arm liposuction has some differences and similarities to other liposuction procedures.  The goal of this article will be to give you a general review of what arm liposuction is, what a patient will normally go through while getting arm liposuction, and any risk factors and benefits of arm liposuction.

Arm Liposuction is exactly what it sounds like.  It is a liposuction procedure done on your arms to remove the excess fat in the arm area.  The most common type of liposuction done on the arms is a tumescent liposuction procedure.  This procedure is often used to cut away flabby fat that holds onto the arms and won't go away even with exercise.

Like I stated above, the most common form, and safest form, of arm liposuction is a tumescent liposuction procedure.  Tumescent means to cause "swelling." So what a tumescent liposuction procedure is going to do is cause the fat cells in your arms to swell.  Once the fat cells have swollen they are going to be that much easier to remove. 

A tumescent arm liposuction is going to be done under local anesthesia, meaning you will not have to be fully knocked out to perform the procedure, but the area being performed on will be numbed.  This makes liposuction safer than traditional liposuctions that require full anesthesia.  

In this arm liposuction procedure, you will be injected with a shot that will numb the arm area, as well as start to swell those fat cells, making their removal very easy. A couple of small incisions will have to be placed on the inside of your arm.  These incisions are where the fat cells are going to be sucked out of using a tiny little device called a cannula. 

For some patients, they are going to be advised to get an arm tuck after performing arm liposuction.  This will be done if a lot of fat is removed from the arms, creating hanging skin from that area.  An arm tuck is a very simple form of plastic surgery, but it may be required after arm liposuction depending on the amount of fat removed, and the exact look you want to have for your arms, including the upper arms.  Upper arm liposuction is a popular choice for people looking to tone up the arms.

One of the most important things to investigate when considering arm liposuction, or any type of liposuction, is the recovery time needed after the procedure.  For your surgically operated on arm, you are looking at about 4-6 weeks before you are almost fully healed, but do take extra time before rushing back into things full swing.  Exact recovery time can be hard to determine, just because recovery time depends so much on a person’s health level and genetics.

The goal of arm liposuction is to remove the excess fat from the arms.  This will hopefully improve a person's self confidence, and allow them to wear sleeveless clothes and be more comfortable in what they wear. 

The procedure takes less time than normal liposuction.  This will be an outpatient procedure taking anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours.  The length of the procedure depends on the amount of fat being removed.

The arms are a very difficult place to lose weight from.  For those who have tried diet and exercise, and not gotten the results they wanted, arm liposuction can be a way to remove that fat. 

The biggest drawback of arm liposuction is if too much fat is removed, than you will have hanging skin.  This can be taken care of with an arm tuck surgery, but nobody likes to go through extra procedures.  Make sure you talk with your doctor about this possibility and see if they think it may occur. 

There may also be some small scarring where the incisions are made to remove the fat.  These should be on the inside of your arm, and hardly visible to the public.  However, if permanent scarring is a major concern for you, than this can be a problem.
